Why do we need to take refuge in the triple gem? By taking refuge in the triple gems (Buddha, Buddha's Teaching, Buddhist Community), we can be liberated from suffering. The Buddha has ceased all suffering and attained full enlightenment. The Buddha's Teaching (Dharma) teaches the path that leads to the cessation of suffering and the Buddhist Community (Sangha) practice and help to propagate the dharma and is our companion on the path. As such, the triple gems are beneficial to those who wish to practice the Dharma.
