Sagaramudra Buddhist
Society came into existence in 1988. It was formed with the noble aim of
bringing the teaching of the Buddha to the public through a systematic,
organised and effective manner. The society hopes to impart Buddhist
thoughts, ideas and knowledge to the general public in the hope that with
proper cultivation methods and techniques it will help all practitioners
find true joy, happiness, peace and freedom in their lives.
The society started
with a meagre membership of 20. Today, it boasts a significant number of
members and devotees, including 25 monks and nuns.
In 1994, due to the
rapid growth in membership and activities, the society shifted its
premises to 393 A/B Guillemard Road. Over the next 5 years, we received
overwhelming response in our activities
and as our membership grew, we started looking for a more appropriate
place to meet the needs. The search was completed in 1999 and we found an ideal
location, which is our current premises at
Lorong 29 Geylang. The old building was torn down in 2001 and
a new 8 storey building was erected consisting of classrooms, a meditation
cum multi-purpose hall, main prayer hall, library, publication department,
kitchen
cum dining area and administration
offices.
The new building was
completed in 2003 and operation started in 2004. With the completion of
the new building, we are able to offer more courses and activities to both
Buddhists and non-Buddhists. Our courses are varied and we encourage a
“come and experience for yourself” mindset to decide whether the courses
and
the environment meet your expectations
and spiritual needs.
In
2001, the society started spreading Buddhism to Malaysia and Australia,
where suitable tranquil sites were found and developed into overseas
branches. Local devotees and lay- members have great opportunities to go
for Buddhist retreats or attend specialized Dharma courses in very serene
environments, far away from the hectic city life of Singapore, at these
overseas branches.
Given the pace of
change, the Society is gearing itself against the pressing demand and
expansion growth to meet the on-going challenges ahead.

393A/B Guillemard Road.
